Middle School Studio
Grades 6–8
Middle School builds capable, confident young adults.
Middle School Studio is a joyful, purposeful environment where learners take increasing ownership of their learning, their leadership, and their future.
Each day combines meaningful academic challenge with growing independence, helping learners develop initiative, responsibility, sound judgment, and the maturity that comes from doing meaningful work.
Here, learners are known, challenged, and trusted with increasing responsibility as they prepare themselves for life beyond Middle School.
What Middle School Learners Experience
Every day, learners:
- ✅ Master increasingly advanced reading, writing, and mathematics through personalized learning plans.
- ✅ Set ambitious goals, manage long-term projects, and reflect on their own growth.
- ✅ Explore complex questions through daily Socratic discussions that strengthen reasoning, communication, and respectful disagreement.
- ✅ Apply academic learning to meaningful projects in science, history, entrepreneurship, economics, and the arts.
- ✅ Build leadership in a mixed-age community where responsibility is expected and earned.
- ✅ Practice real-world skills through increasing ownership of daily life in the studio, Independence Reps, off-campus experiences, and apprenticeships.
- ✅ Continue developing physical strength, resilience, and teamwork through daily movement and exercise.
Learning becomes more demanding.
Expectations become higher.
Responsibility grows.
Greater freedom follows.
A Different Kind of Middle School
Middle School learners don't spend their day waiting to be told what comes next.
Instead, they use clear systems to manage priorities, meet deadlines, solve problems, and take increasing ownership of both their work and their community.
Technology remains a tool—not a learning strategy.
Learners continue using digital tools where they add value, while regularly writing by hand, discussing ideas, presenting their thinking, and applying what they've learned in authentic situations.
Relationships remain at the center of every school day.
What Parents Notice
Families often notice that their children are:
- Taking greater ownership of their schedules, goals, and commitments.
- Communicating with greater confidence and maturity.
- Becoming stronger writers and more thoughtful speakers.
- Solving problems with increasing independence.
- Carrying greater responsibility at home as well as at school.
They also appreciate:
- Public exhibitions every six weeks that showcase meaningful work.
- Clear academic progress.
- Strong relationships built on accountability, trust, and shared expectations.
- A learning environment that treats young people as increasingly capable.
Built for High School—and Beyond
Middle School is a bridge between childhood and adulthood.
Responsibility comes first. Greater freedom follows.
Learners leave with more than strong academics.
They've practiced leading, communicating professionally, managing long-term work, keeping commitments, solving complex problems, and contributing meaningfully to their community.
Those experiences help them prepare themselves not only for high school, but for a meaningful life.
