How We're Different
Every school makes design choices.
At Acton Academy Lakewood, every major decision is guided by one question: Will this help young people become more capable?
Here are some of the choices we've made.
Mixed-Age Studios
Learners grow in mixed-age communities rather than classrooms divided strictly by age.
Younger learners see what's possible. Older learners grow through leadership, mentoring, and greater responsibility.
Like healthy families, workplaces, and communities, our studios are places where everyone has something to contribute and something to learn.
Mastery Learning
Passing isn't the goal. Mastery is.
Learners continue building core skills until they demonstrate true understanding. Strong foundations make future learning smoother, especially in reading and mathematics.
Meaningful Responsibility
Responsibility comes first. Greater freedom follows.
Learners are expected to care for their community, keep commitments, solve problems, and own the consequences of their choices.
As they demonstrate greater responsibility, they earn greater freedom, greater leadership opportunities, and greater trust from the community.
Real-World Projects
Knowledge becomes more meaningful when it is used.
Learners regularly apply reading, writing, mathematics, science, history, entrepreneurship, and the arts to authentic projects that require creativity, collaboration, and perseverance.
Parents as Partners
Parents remain the most important influence in a child's life.
School works best when home and school pull in the same direction.
Our role is not to replace parents, but to partner with them.
Thoughtful Discussion
Learning to think requires learning to talk, listen, question, and disagree respectfully.
Every day, learners are encouraged to ask difficult questions, consider different perspectives, and think deeply rather than simply trying to find the expected answer.
High Expectations
Children are capable of more than they're often given the opportunity to show.
We challenge learners with meaningful work, clear standards, and a culture of support that helps them rise to those expectations.
Growth Without Artificial Limits
Learning isn't limited by grade level.
As learners master new skills, they continue moving forward.
Growth is driven by mastery, curiosity, effort, and responsibility—not by the calendar alone.
Our Goal
Everything at Acton Academy Lakewood is intentionally designed to help young people become more capable.
Capable young people are more likely to embrace challenge, take wise risks, discover their unique gifts, and build lives of meaning and contribution.
That's the standard we use when making decisions. If something helps young people become more capable, we lean into it. If it doesn't, we look for a better way.
